I have faint memories that I'd already heard "Birds of a Feather" on the radio by the time I first saw them play it on 8/1/98 so I think the hype for the song had started by the time they were in Europe.
Nice essay, as always, Rob. BTW, much as I have enjoyed baseball video and computer games since childhood in the 1980s, I gave up MLB The Show three years ago at age 47 because I realized the eyes and the reflexes weren’t what they used to be. I wonder if you may be getting ready to hang up the cleats, too?
I'm a diehard OOTP player first, but buy The Show every few years to hit some dingers. I'm fine in single player mode when it adjusts the difficulty to my meager skills, but get shredded as soon as I try to play someone online.
Yeah, I must admit I adjusted the difficulty level down enough that my character, Olivier Winchell, a transvestite who was named after my son (Oliver) and daughter (Ivie) and who had Corey Seager’s body as a base, could bat .400 and hit 75 HRs with 200 RBI in leading my hometown Seattle Mariners to their first ever World Series (back to back!) before taking a huge contract with the Dodgers, LOL.
Unfortunately, real life Oliver at age 15 pilfered my PS4 and accidentally deleted the data, so we’ll never know how great Olivier’s full career would have been!
Anyway, good luck with your aging eyes and reflexes and keep hitting dingers both in the game and with your essays!
