In honor of how much I respectfully disagree with your take on this show, I am now blasting 7/9/99 Mike’s from Live Bait 9. One of the more interesting and different takes on Mike’s. And one of my very favorites. Mike is a bass God here.

The meat of this 2nd set is absolutely fantastic Phish, for me. Celebrate the quietness and space in the music, as the run up to the greatest show in the history of rock and roll approaches.

Tough but fair assessment, though as with much of 1999, I became much more of a fan of the whole Mike’s Groove once the soundboard was released (Live Bait Vol. 9). Like many of the shows that summer, the miserable weather was at least partially responsible for the lethargy — low 90s at showtime:

I’d never in my young life felt as hot and sweaty at a concert, a record that would last a staggering 8-9 days.

I like the way the sometimes languid tempos sound in the ballads. I think this is one of the best eras for the slow songs--the 7/4 FEFY, for instance, but others like Brian and Robert, When the Circus Comes....
