Went down a bit of a rabbit hole on phishcrit during lunch hour. So much great stuff in these reviews--well done, Rob.
Also found the rmp post where Rob reviewed the first show he ever attended (8/10/96). Here's what he said about the first two songs played, the first two songs he ever saw the band play live....
"My Friend My Friend: an interesting opener, not one i would have
expected. played pretty straightforward, not much jamming.
Poor Heart: a poor heart is a poor heart is a poor heart. always the
same, no exception here."
Our friend and guide through Phishtory was a jaded vet from the first note of his first show. And here we are, getting on 30 years later....
Absolutely perfect write-up. Thank you for identifying all these small moments of the show...I'm mainly familiar with the Tweezer and Boogie On and don't think I've given it a full front to back listen.
The video of this show really captures some of the vibe of the scene/impending chaos during the late 90s with Trey pulling people on stage for the Meatstick.
Love this perspective as always, thanks Rob. This show in Tijuana North is an absolute gem from start to finish. Can’t talk enough about how much I love this millennial sound that we start to hear in earnest during the Boise Bag earlier that week and then in this whole show. From the get, everything sounds so haunted and foreboding….its a great precursor to the LG just 3.5mo later.
99 was the first year I started doing any type of touring with the band so I’m partial to this year, can’t wait to hear the rest.

It's available to stream for free on LivePhish right now. Probably until the end of September
Love what you did with "My Bloody Valentrey"!!
I've never heard this show, have to look it up after reading your writeup!
